Hey---keep your hands off my sushi! This was my first reaction to hearing that Oceana, a marine conservation group, found very high levels of mercury in samples of sushi-grade Tuna that they tested. One sample had twice the "action level" that the Food and Drug Administration sets for when they take action to remove a product from the market. Aiieee!!! My wife and I have decided, after much tasting, that our favorite piece of sashimi (the sushi fish itself) is White Tuna. And now this?!?
Well, upon further research it seems that my wife and I and many sushi lovers are not in the danger zone. The groups that should avoid sushi and other kinds of fish such as Swordfish and King Mackerel are women who are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant and young children. There are some "kid safe" fish out there such as Tilapia or Wild Alaskan Salmon, so don't avoid fish altogether! There are many benefits to eating fish, such as the Omega-3's that benefit cardiovascular health and can have anti-inflammatory effects. Fish are also an excellent source of protein. Finally, sushi and sashimi are really yummy for the tummy!!!
