Wondering where to store those leftovers? Considering that reuse is a vital part of the "reduce, reuse, recycle" credo, I've discovered that I can derive many food storage containers from the products I buy from the supermarket without having to invest in Gladware, Tupperware, or any other some such storage product.
There are many products that come in plastic containers with lids, such as margarine, sour cream, cream cheese, or my favorite---hummus! During the course of a month I'll probably accumulate a handful of plastic containers with lids. Some become food storage containers because I prefer their size or maybe because their lids aren't recyclable, while others I'll recycle. Through this practice I have accumulated many worthy food storage containers (most of them Tribe Hummus containers), for no more cost than what I paid for the original product. I even go as far as to hang onto some unrecyclable takeout containers and those little Solo cups that restaurants put salad dressing in (Did you know that those lidded Solo cups are NOT recyclable?).
Every couple of months the cabinet that holds our food containers will begin to overflow, so I'll sift through my collection of containers and I'll recycle some of the well-used ones in favor of newer ones. Once again, the containers that almost always make the "cut" are the ones that aren't recyclable.
So, my "green sexy" tip of the week is to use the containers you already have on hand from the products you normally buy for food storage instead of wasting money and resources buying superfluous storage products!
