As usual, the holidays just kind of crept up on us and not only did we have to do some furious last-minute shopping, but we were also without a Christmas tree for our house! My wife and I decided to visit Heberle Farms, which is just a short drive away from our Hamlin, NY home. I've always been intrigued by the prospect of getting a potted tree, for it would really give me the opportunity to give back to the Earth, instead of simply taking away (wondering about potted vs. cut vs. artificial---check the link above). We settled on a lovely 5 1/2 foot potted Douglas Fir and were thrilled that the friendly farmer gave it to us for $20 dollars!
After our transaction, the farmer asked us about our position on the issue of windmills in Hamlin. You see, there is a proposal to install 40 windmills in our town of Hamlin; news that has been greeted with either enthusiasm or angry opposition (more of the latter than the former). My wife and I believe he ventured the question because he spied the Community Energy sticker on the back window of my car (there's a windmill on it!). We informed him of our supportive position and he echoed a lot of our sentiments. He extolled the virtues of wind energy, from its renewability to the reduction of the United States' dependence on foreign oil. Hey, wasn't it George Herbert Walker Bush who, in his State of the Union Address, boldly decreed that "WE ARE ADDICTED TO OIL"? Look out Al Gore---there's a new sheriff in town (ha)! ANYWAYS, we parted ways with a hearty handshake, a new potted evergreen, and a newfound ally in the War of the Winds!
That's what I call a very GREEN day!
